Screening & Diagnosis

  • Colorectal cancer can be diagnosed with imaging studies (CT or MRI), or colonoscopy. A biopsy is not always required to make the diagnosis. Currently for asymptomatic patients over 50 years, alternative options for screening include FIT testing, stool DNA testing, and CT Colonography (offered at select imaging centers only).

Surgery Care

  • Find a surgeon with expertise in minimally invasive surgery, to possibly decrease the size of the incision. Also find one who supports enhanced recovery algorithms and multimodal pain regimens. Typically elective colon surgery can be performed laparoscopically or robotically, with an average length of stay of 2-3 days for uncomplicated procedures.

Aftercare (what to expect)

  • Incisions: Monitor for purulent (pus) drainage and redness. Remove outer dressings in 2 days and shower

  • Ostomy (separate page link)

    • You will receive ostomy care instructions prior to discharge. Typically the bag will need to be emptied once daily. The “phlange” or sticky portion that attaches to your skin, will need to have a good seal and can be changed once to twice weekly.

    • For all things ostomy, including helpful videos and tutorials please visit: https://www.veganostomy.ca/

  • Exercises - You will begin a walking regimen starting on the first post-operative day. The goal is to ambulate at least once per hour, while awake. Gradually increase activity over the first few days until you are walking for at least 1 hour daily.

  • When to call: If you develop fevers, marked abdominal bloating, or nausea/vomiting/inability to eat, please contact your surgeon’s office and make arrangements to return to the hospital.

Chemo & Radiation

Surveillance

  • Following treatment, your doctor may recommend a surveillance regimen consisting of repeat imaging and/or exams every 6 months to yearly.
